STATEMENT
My paintings reference the natural world through the lenses of geometric and gestural
abstraction. They have one foot rooted in the past, utilizing traditional materials and
techniques, while the other foot stands firmly in the present – drawing from and
responding to the history of Southern California abstraction, specifically the gradients
of the Light and Space movement and the rigid geometry of the Hard Edge school.
They are the result of ceaseless experimentation, constantly evolving by pushing
forward while also drawing from past work. They are simultaneously fast and slow.
Improvised acrylic stains, scrapes, drips and brush marks create foundations that are
meticulously covered over in oil paint, culminating in compositions where windows of
the earliest layers interact with later adjustments and additions. In this way, they reflect
the city of Los Angeles itself – building up, destroying, preserving, redeveloping – both
chaotic and tranquil, grimy yet gorgeous.
BIO
Christopher Kuhn (born 1977 Chicago, IL) lives and paints in Los Angeles, CA. His work
has been presented in solo exhibitions around the world including Ronchini Gallery,
London; Gallery One Four, Seoul; Jacob’s West, Los Angeles; Galerie Bessieres, Paris;
Geary Contemporary, New York; Field Contemporary, Vancouver, and Sonce Alexander
Gallery, Los Angeles. His paintings have been featured in art ltd., Blouin Artinfo,
Harper's Bazaar Art, Artslant, British GQ, the Huffington Post, and on the BBC World
News. He graduated from the American University of Paris with a B.A. in Art History
and earned a Post Baccalaureate Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine
